You're not supposed to talk to strangers...
... Unless, perhaps, your family runs an Inn.
For all of her twelve years Jane Wilde has lived with her parents in the tiny cottage at the top of the hill near the southern coast of Maine, and together they run Eastwood House Inn up at the big estate house. Her only friends are the people who work there, and her only adventures are in books from the dusty old library she has to clean every Saturday. Strangers are just business as usual.
But the usual becomes unusual when Jane Wilde’s mother vanishes and her father takes up a secret nightly ritual - staring into an enormous mirror he hides in the shed. Things start to go missing around Eastwood while two dark demons begin haunting the forest edge… and Jane’s dreams.
When the malicious shadows circling Eastwood check in at the Reception Desk, Jane and her new friend Penelope Flores become separated from their families and flee unknowingly into a fantasy world that looks curiously like their own but proves to be far more treacherous. Taken in by a traveling band of misfit performers, the girls assume new identities to conceal their forbidden origins. Together they must learn to blend in amongst the Company’s curious caravan to avoid exposing their hazardous difference and evade the demons still stalking their trail.
Traveling far from the familiar, Jane and Penelope trade soccer for sorcery and cellphones for swords as they become entangled in a secret quest. Along the road, they find not only extraordinary friends, deadly games, and the secrets to magic but a dangerous legend that perhaps can lead them home… if the darkness doesn’t devour it first.
